is it possible to start an engine if it's elec. start only and you don't have a control box? I want to see if the engine runs. Thanks

sure pull the rope. you will probably have to choke it to stop it.

do i have to add the rope myself? the other engine I had actually had manual start so it was easy...I don't know what to do with this one.

Re: Johnson '77 35hp start

ok guys...i used a remote starter switch to try and start the motor to check compression...the starter is just spinning, not popping up and engaging the flywheel...any ideas? it spins pretty fast.

weak battery, dirty connections, put a few drops of oil on the bendix shaft.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

well the battery is good...it fires my dads 140 evinrude just fine...I am going to take a look at my connections again and clean them accordingly...I manually lifted up the starter teeth and lined them up with the flywheel and it "acts" like it wants to start but not enough juice...

Use jumper cables one to ground on the starter the other directly to the big starter terminal.

Re: Johnson '77 35hp start

does that bypass the selenoid? what is the difference in doing that, and using the remote trigger?

one more thing...does this thing take the control box with the "red" plug or the "black" plug? I am looking at getting a control box, but am unsure which one is the right one

Re: Johnson '77 35hp start

is there a way to test my starter to see if it's working right before buying another one?

Do as steelespike said and the starter should spin. That is a direct connection. If it does not turn then it's most likely time to take it to a starter shop!

Re: Johnson '77 35hp start

ok....got the starter back...got it to engage...compression was at 120 on both cylinders!!!:D it started the motor on like the second crank and I got to see that my water pump install was succesfull as it had strong pee stream. I am willing to bet my carbs are gummed up as I cannot keep it running. I sprayed starting fluid in there and it starts right up then dies. How hard is it to do a carb rebuild myself? Should i just pay the $80-90 for my mechanic?

Its not hard, But don't touch the needle valves at all. If the packing, bushings or needles get damaged u cannot get new ones. Other then that it takes me 10 minutes + taking it off the motor.

Re: Johnson '77 35hp start

I don't see this on my motor, mine is a 33hp 1970 or so.
It looks like it isn't supposed to be there! so if i were you i would clean it up and get some high quality silicone caulk and fill it in nicely with it and keep checking it once in a while. Or get some aluminoid its solder type weld that u can use with a blow torch unless you have a welder fitted for welding aluminum.
In my pictures i don't see that near my fill hole, but on the bottom their is 2 things that look broken off or hit by something.
Also drain the lower gear oil, it is probably full of water. Dont touch the Philips screw.
Matt Good luck

ok...here is the spots where water leaks out of...the spot circled in red also has water coming out...I've included a video of when the engine is running and you can see the water coming out of the side hole i've mentioned already...and now the other hole circled in red. Pee stream is strong!
