Good, you're rebuiilding the carbs. That's always a good idea.
You really need a manual. The sync/link function is very critical. The sync/link basically syncs up the carbs with the timing. If it's off, you can destroy that engine in a heartbeat.
You have been messing with the adjustments. You need to get them right. If you do, that engine will wow you for 20 more years. It's a great engine.
