I was wrong about two things. First, the thermostat plate hole has a recessed channel that allows it to be accessed from both chambers, so no need to drill an extra hole. Second, I must not have swapped the thermostats as I thought yesterday because when I reassembled today, I decided to swap and now the hot cylinder problem is on the starboard side. The problem is the thermostat!

Thank you all for your input, sorry to have made the initial mistake of thinking I had swapped the thermostats.

Good news, that. Just be glad you have a flatback motor. The bubble butt motors make thermostat work a major PITA.
