mrose,

We need a litle bit more description as to what is happening.

1. When was the last time the carburetors were rebuilt? Never? You're overdue.

2. "Synch & Link? performed?

Manuals available here.

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/manuals/

mrose, next time you do this, try pushing the key in to 'choke' the motor. If it doesn't quit, your motor maybe running lean and need the carbs rebuilt.

DHP

I also had this problem and found that on the throttle linkage there is a small round roll pin or tab that holds idle open. On this pin is plastic sleeve, mine was worn off and not holding throttle open enough. I just installed a small rubber hose on this pin and idles fine now.

guys i have an 88 spl your low speeds jets are either clogging, or your idle speed screw is set too low. if your carbs have not been cleaned and rebuilt with a rebuild kit. they are overdue. proper maintainance, means a proper operating engine. i love my engine and have never had a problem, other than dirt doppers clogging the vent line on the built in tank.
