Just Purchased 70's Model 9.5 Johnson That Has Sat For 2yrs. The Carb Was Caked With Buildup. Cleaned Carb To New Condition With Cleaner And Air. Purchased Oem Rebuild Kit. Installed New Float And Needle, Oring For Slow Speed Needle, Upper And Lower Gaskets. If I Pour Gas Into Carb She Fires On First Pull. The Slow Speed Circuit Must Be Issue. However Carb Cleaner Came Out Every Orifice Including The Small Pin Holes In Bottom Of Throat. The Only Thing I Haven't Done Is Pull The Larger Plug Off The Side Of The Carb. I Believe Whatever Is Behind There Is Clean Because Of The Easy Flow Of The Carb Cleaner When Being Sprayed. No Gas, No Run Please Help!!
Thank You Much

OK, did you remove and clean the high speed orfice plug? It is deep in the hole behind the hex head plug. It must be absolutely clean without even a hint of any coating in the hole. Nothing less will do.

Captain, Thanks For Responding
I'm Not Sure Exactly What High Speed Orifice Your Referencing.
I Believe Your Talking Above The Float Needle Or The Brass Stem That Protrudes Down Into The Lower Second Half Of The Carb. Both Were Sprayed With A Ton Of Cleaner And The Cleaner Proceeded To Come Out Of Other Holes. I Appreciate Any Help Immensly.

Since you don't know what I'm talking about, it's obvious that you haven't removed and cleaned it. It's also obvious that that is where the trouble is.

Look at the lower part of the carburetor. At the very bottom, facing forward toward the front of the motor is a hex-headed bolt with a slot in the head. Remove that bolt and in the threaded hole behind it, way down deep in the hole is the high speed orfice plug. The orfice or hole in it is very small and gums up easy because it is in the very bottom of the float bowl where the last dregs of gas lay and turn to gum.

It takes a special screwdriver to get the orfice out without damage. You can make your own from a screwdriver with a 3/16" round shank (think phillips). Cut off the business end and file a new blade to the dimensions shown in the attachment. The secret is that the sides of the blade have to be parralel to prevent expanding the soft brass orfice. The round shank prevents buggering up the threads in the hole. http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s311/frankr_photos/FixedJetScrewdriver2.jpg?t=1187318736

Here's a pic of the high speed jet in the float chamber base from a 1971 9.5 HP. You can use the blunt end of a drill bit to make sure the orifice is .048 inches.

I wish I had found this old thread before trying to get the orfice out of my carb.

I fear it is really screwed now. I attempted to remove using a standard cabinet screwdriver. You guessed it - one ear on the orfice broke.

I'm confident the orfice is clean. Is the broken ear going to be a problem?
