i have gone through hell trying to get this motor working right, we replaced the whole water pump, had the shop service the motor, new head gasket, cylinder cover, thermostat, finally we got water flowing, we had a problem with it staying in forward, fixed that all up, but now, when we go over about 1/3 power, the motor starts to evaporate its "waste water" coming out of the exhaust, if we plane on the 10 ft inflatable zodiac we are pushing, it overheats and starts to cease up, i barely got the motor running enough to cool it down and save it. (i hope)

a couple things i may have pinpointed are, dirty/clogged intake mesh filter, problem with the water pump (i was not the last one to look at this, the guy at the shop went and checked it, something may be wrong.)

or am i just beating a dead horse here...

thanks

Re: Johnson 9.5 hp kicker

Several thing not associated with the cooling can cause an outboard to overheat.

Running too lean. Carb must be immaculately clean.
Too much ignition advance. Set it by the book.
Wrong plugs. You need Champion J4C, gapped at .030"
Lugging (wrong prop for the application).

Re: Johnson 9.5 hp kicker

ill check with the mechanic, im not mechanic myself, he gapped the plugs and everything, one more thing, that day we ran it, we decided to not pack it up and leave, we had fun with the motor, at a slow run, temps got hot (mechanic said the exhaust manifold should be cold enough that you can hold your hand on it and not have to pull your hand off) i would say around 120-150 at the approx 1/3 speed that we ran it (the boat would plane with equip and me sitting toward the front, barely) i was worried about going over, and as i said, if we ran faster, we evaporated the water.

compression on the engine, when the mechanic checked, was at 70 in both cylinders.

edit: new thermostat... shouldnt have any problems, installed by mechanic.

thanks a lot for your help, i would love this motor to work, otherwise im gonna have to buy a new motor...
