Johnson 9.5 Pull start question

I was out on the lake on an island , engine stopped, gave the pull start a tug, engine started, lucky for me, but did not recoil. Took the re-coil part out and brought it to the Marine store and found it had only lost the pin that goes thru the upper part, thru the plastic gear. Well that was easy.

But...

My question is do I need to "pre-load" the spring by turning the shaft via the screw atop the shaft and then putting in the pin? If so how much. I ask because w/o doing this it does not recoil. Hope this makes some sense.

18 turns counter clockwise, then put the pin in and let it recoil. Make sure you have a good grasp with a screw driver or what not when you are doing this procedure because that spring can get rowdy when wound up that many times and you let is loose.

i just got done replacing the pinion gear and it was a learning experience for me because I knew nothing. its an easy fix though.

I believe that is a serial number, could you look and see what the model number is as well?

Another way to do this is to remove the recoil starter plate and all its fittings intact. Wind the starter rope around the grooves, reinstall the plate and rope. This way, you might end up with lesser tension on full release of the starter rope but the full tension when pulled will be enough to get the rope to re:coil.
