I have a good lower unit off a 1981 Johnson 9.9 long shaft I would like to sell. I know it fits a slew of model numbers 9.9 & 15 HP from 1977 – 1984 – Question is:

1) Is the shift linkage rod the same on this end for both long & short shafts?
2) How does the drive shaft come out so it can be replaced with a short shaft.
3) Any other concerns?

Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill,
1) The shift rod is longer on the long shaft version. Can be swapped out, as it's threaded into the shift pivot arm. However, can be tricky, as once the shift rod is removed the nub that it threads into can move. Some balancing acts and gentle tapping may be required to get it to re-align.
2) Remove the waterpump cartridge and pull the driveshaft out. Nothing holding it in other than the waterpump key.
3) None that I'm aware of...

Seems pretty straight forward to me to go from short to long or long to short, am I missing something here?

Drive shaft & shift rod need to be changed, this looks pretty easy and the water tube extention is in the lower unit extention, what else is there ???

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The pinion gear is usually held on the driveshaft with a nut. Only way to get to it is to disassemble the L/U.

No pinion nut on the 9.9/15's. Drive shaft just slips into the pinion splines. Very easy to convert from long to short or vise versa.
