Just bought a johnson 9.9 with no spark, previous owner said it has a bad magneto. It's got good compression appears to be low hours so I wanna bring it to life! Under the flywheel I think I'm seeing a pick up and maybe a stator? I also found what I believe is a cdi box on the side. I'm looking for help to troubleshoot it. I have a voltmeter. Not sure exactly what to test or how. I've already checked the grounds and connectors also checked the kill switch. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Update. Tested all wires for continuity they check out. Under the flywheel I tested the brown pickup coil. Ac 0 dc 8 ohms 36.8. Green black coil ac 80-100v dc maybe 3 ohms 540. I have no clue how to test these so I tried all three methods. They readings were taken while I cranked the engine other than ohms. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I dont wanna throw money at this thing blind.

I had the same problem with my 1980 9.9 Johnson, lost spark on both cylinders.

I suppose it depends on how much your time is worth and how much you enjoy the troubleshooting. But the most likely cause is the ignition module, replaced mine and it fired right up.

With out a service manual and a guess, I'd say a power pack is bad.

I tried using their site I think they charge for the troubleshooting service

Sorry i do not know how to share a link. If you open up the cdi 5th edition trouble shooting guide it says that it is a payed service. But if you scroll down there is 125 pages of free info. Page 105/106 has dva and resistance charts.

I bought new; figured the old one had lasted 38 years...didn't want to take a chance on a 37 year old used one.

Where is a good place to buy a new one? I seen some on ebay for about 70$ if I go new I want to be sure it's worth the price.

try to do some trouble shooting till you can no longer advance otherwise you may be spending money for nothing and...worst blowing a new part because the original problem was elsewhere

patience brings joy but learning has a price :frusty:

Thanks folks for all the info. After troubleshooting today I've found the problem to be the power pack. I'm gonna get one ordered asap.
