Re: Johnson 9.9 "Professionally" changed to 15hp

thanks for all the help
looks like i'll sell the motor on CL.
how much should i ask?

Test it out, don't just dump it! If the motor is mint and has all 9.9 parts, it may just require a carb swap, 9.9 carbs are a dime a dozen. Sale price all depends on your demographics and condition of the motor in question. In my area I could get 6-800 for a decent 9.9/15, some guys can only get $300 for them, it all depends.

haha yes i should probably try it out first before ridding myself of it.
I guess if the motor supplies enough power and runs fine then theres no need to change it.
the guy tried telling me that "9.9 to 15hp with carb change is basically a 15 no difference" haha if i hadn't used this site i might've actually fallen for it!

Well he is correct if he were referencing the early motors, the late motors were somewhat different and required more kibbles

This guy did the conversion changing the carb. I think if you were to use it as a runner rather than a troller you'd probably fair out ok.

Let's face it, these motors aren't new and unless you take them apart entirely and inspect every inch of them we are all buying someone else's "project" when we buy used.

I'd say at least check the compression, it's a good cheap tell tale method of weeding out the good from the bad.

I have a stock 82 15 and I use a 83 9.9 cowling cover so I can use it in lakes where 10 HP is the max. To the untrained eye, my 15 is a 9.9 and so the opposite holds true for your 9.9. If it moves your boat well enough then it is enough motor no matter. I agree with TD, when it comes to repair, plan on a bit of frustration and doing it yourself. IMO anyway. Rick.
