Johnson 9.9 strange water/exhaust problem.

I bought a motor with great compression, 110# and 108#. It is in great shape. We started it and it ran great, and pumped water for 30 seconds then stopped. I figured it was a water pump, so I got the motor, and sure enough, the water pump was fried, and most of it was left in the pump housing.

I ran a 3/8" hose adapter to my garden hose to check for blockages, and flowing water came out of the tell tale, and the water exhaust holes. It also unfortunately came down the side of the copper input tube that hooks into the exhaust housing. When I turned the pressure way down, the first place the water came from was down the side of the copper tube. (It is not leaking from the hose, it is coming from up high on the input tube.)

I then put the water pump in and screwed the lower unit back up to the motor(making sure the housing outlet grommet was seated on the input line) and no water came out of the tell tale hole, but air exhaust came out of the water exhaust holes.

I am thinking that I have either an exhaust manifold leak, or a leak at the input grommet in the exhaust housing. I just wanted some experienced advice before I pull the power head. Thanks guys!!:)

Those two holes are exhaust releif holes not water hole although some water mist will come out after the thermostat opens. If no water out of the tell tale run a lenght of weedwhacker line up the hole and see if you have a blockage from a mud dauber in there which is common. Good luck.:)

Okay, well the thing is that there is water flowing from it when I put the garden hose up to the input shaft. That is what is puzzling, so I do not believe that there is a clog in the line.

Give us a model number so we can identify the year of your motor. Have you tried to poke something like a weed wacker nylon up the tell tale hole to try to unblock any debris?

Also, Will, where is the water exhaust at? I thought that the exhaust from the combustion was out of the center of the prop. Is this incorrect?

What year is it? Exhaust does exit from the prop, at least in the later models.

You think that part 19 is leaking? The rubber grommet? Seems like an odd spot to leak from.

Exhaust relief means that it helps to start the motor in the water; the main exhaust is thru the prop but have you ever tried to start a car or truck with the exhaust pipe outlet under water; you can't!

Pull the powerhead and replace grommet number 19. Your test indicates it leaks. It will also restrict the waterflow.

Thats what I was thinking Clanton. Not even the marine mechanic at the local marina would tell me this. I pulled the head last night, and sure enough the input line grommet was busted along with a slight exhaust leak. I also had some of the blown impeller in the tell tale hole. Thanks guys.

So guys, when I checked the supply line for leaks, it had a tiny little pinhole about two inches from the top. It looks like a clean drilled hole. Is this supposed to be here or should I plug it up. I haven't been able to find any info anwhere.

I actually think that hole is there on purpose to cool it down up there a bit.

Thanks whaler. That is what I thought. It is not much water that passes, so I doubt it will interfere with water flow. I have been looking all over the net and couldnt find any info on it.

I am also wondering why I do not have part # 16. The motor is an 81, and I see an exhaust water tube on the marine engine site, I just didnt have one on the motor that I just bought. I wonder if there were two versions of the '81 and one didnt use a water exhaust tube. ANybody know?

using the same site, looks like 1981 was the first year of use as the 1980 models don't have one

Gotcha. Well I have an 81 and it doesnt have one. I bet it is a carry-over from the previous year. Either way, there is a dedicated spot for the exhaust water to exit the powerhead.
