Hi,

I have a Johnson 9.9 outboard, and the engine wont go out of reverse. I was wondering how to remove the lower leg so I can get at the gearbox?

It is a manual switch engine and I cannot get neutral or forwards

Can anyone give me detailed info as to how to remove the lower leg, I can get it to drop by about two inches, but how do I get it off?
Or anyone offer any advice as to what is likely to be up with it?

Also, is the prop housing cover which is held on by two bolts glued/threaded on as it wont shift after I have removed the bolts.

Any help gratefully recieved :)

Thanks

Re: Johnson 9.9 stuck in reverse

Welcome to iboats rarms.

What's holding the gearcase in place is the shift rod. If it's a long shaft, you'll have to disconnect the extension houseing. The shift rod coupler will be there. It's a brass piece with two screws in it. Remove the upper screw and the upper shift rod will pull out.

If it's a short shaft, you should be able to see the coupler. Remove the same as above.

Have you checked the gear lube for any signs of metal or water? When you say that it won't shift, is the throttle backed down to shift? There is a mechanical stop on the side of the engine that will prevent shifting if the throttle is not backed down. It's on the starboard side.

Let us know what ya' find. Thanks.

One more thing, ya' need to get a manual. OEM prefered. Generics like Seyloc and Clymers can be purchased here at iboats. See the bottom of the page.

Looks like a 1980 if the code is read the same as mine:
I N T R O D U C E S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

The "CS" in your model number would read "80"

Re: Johnson 9.9 stuck in reverse

Thanks for everyones help, it is indeed a 1980, and I have solved the problem now, the gear changing rod was stuck in the leg by sand and salt. I removed the leg and jet washed the sand away and now it functions fine again :)
