Johnson 9.9 water problem

ive bee ntrying to figure out what is wrong with the water circulation on a 1989 johnson 9.9. Ive taken the lower unit off and connected a hose to the bottom of the water inlet tube. The water is circulating completely through the motor but the water is exiting from around the oversized hole the water tube passes through (~2" above the water pump) and not the through the exhaust tube. I shined a light through the outlet hole where the hot water leaves the bottom of the head and can see the light when i look up the exhaust tube from the bottom. From an online manual ive read that water coming from the hole the inlet tube passes through should only be caused by a bad exhaust tube gasket or the water tube outlet grommet being squat or plugging the hole out somehow but apparently its rare, and i can see the light when shined in the head so i dont understand why theres no water coming from the exhaust when the hose is on. The motor was not running since i had it set up in my kitchen, ive seen from another thread that there wont be much flow from the exhaust tube if the motor is not running when on a hose/muffs,, is this right??

Help greatly appreciated
thanks

Couple things.

1. Water will only exit the upper exhaust reliefs when: engine warm-stat open. Or, it is deeply submerged.

2. Running a 9.9 on "muffs' in no way replicates real world. Run it in a bucket with the water level above the water pump.

Re: Johnson 9.9 water problem

Sorry, but it is hard to understand your situation. What is the initial problem? Are you not getting any water out the tell tale hole?

The main exhaust water does not mix with the exhaust gasses until it gets into the lower unit. Yes, under the circumstances you describe water will exit there.

There is a gasket between the lower part of the block & the exhaust tube. This exhaust tube is where both inlet & outlet water tubes are attached using a grommet. The copper tubes (both inlet & outlet) are totally sealed off at this point from the upper engine exhaust gasses. You should not be seeing any light from one or the other into the gas exhaust, the way I understand your plea.

There will not be much true exhaust water out the engine UNTIL the thermostat opens. However there should be a lot of tell tale water coming out of that tube all the time IF this tube is not plugged.

While it is running, poke a weed wacker plastic up inside to try to dislodge any debris or bug nests. If that does not clear the tell tale tube, then go back to the FAQ at the start of this section & down near the bottom click onto my 9.9/15 hp OMC repairs link or go to my water circulation link http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/water_circulation.htm Here I describe a method of clearing this plugged tell tale tube (with photos) without any dissassembly.

Re: Johnson 9.9 water problem

I hope i have uploaded these images correctly. it would help me explain it better.

Initially there was no water coming from the tell tale for a few seconds when i went on the lake a few weeks ago but it started flowing within a minute of starting the motor and it was fine for the next hour until i decided to head in and not chance it. The bypass cover was getting too hot to touch (im not sure if the bypass cover is suppose
to get this hot) from the macinist i learned that there is no water around the bypass cover and i seen a guy on youtube take the motor temperature with a temp. gun by pointing it at the bypass cover and was getting between 100 - 120 degrees.
the heads and exhaust cover were still normal temp. Anyways the tell tale water was getting very hot which makes me think the water is getting through the block and head but the hot water cant exit the block\head through the outlet tube/grommet next to the exhaust gasket at the base of the powerhead and is being forced out the tell tale and around the inlet tube just above the water pump. if this is the case wouldnt water also be coming down the exhaust tube from the base of the powerhead as opposed to the aft most cavity after which it meets the exhaust at the bottom of the lower unit through this thin little plate with holes in it seperating the exhaust tube and water outlet tube.

There is water coming from the tell tale and water is reaching the thermostat. With the head removed i held a hose/tube to the water exit hole at the bottom of the head. From here the water is leaving the lower unit from around the copper inlet tube as opposed to the aft most tube/cavity behind the exhaust tube which is where i can see the light from when shining it in the water exit hole at the bottom of the head. So im not sure why there would be no water coming down this tube/cavity if i can see light when looking up through the leg.
