I read the posts of Johnson 90s leaking oil from different places, but this is a new one on me. I just changed the lower unit oil (in the full tilt-down position), and within 24 hours, a small stream of fresh lower unit oil flowed out the exhaust port (behind the propeller).

Is there an overflow tube - did I overfill? (The fluid level was even with the upper screw). Is the casting cracked deep inside?

Will running the motor help swell the seal? Can the seal be replaced without removing the lower unit?

Please help...got a river trip in two weeks.

Re: Johnson 90 V4 Leaking Oil

I did post it in the Johnson/Evinrude Outboard Troubles/Repair Forum.

Would appreciate any input from someone whocan tell me more about seal replacement. Can this be done with a minimum of special tools?

What you're seeing is _most likely_ unburned 2-stroke oil. Do a search on "leaking oil" and you'll see about 90-brazillian other posts just like yours. For the real test, inspect your LU oil and see if it's clear or cloudy.

And welcome to iboats!

Re: Johnson 90 V4 Leaking Oil

is it leaking from the propshaft?

the only way to tell if there is a leak is to vacuum and presure test it with a tool like a mighty vac.

Re: Johnson 90 V4 Leaking Oil

Thank you to all who replied to my post.

The answer did indeed, turn out to be bad rear prop shaft seals.

It was replaced without pulling the lower unit by my auto mechanic who is versed in marine engines.

Thanks again for your input.
