Re: Johnson 9hp problem

I just swapped them today, that's when i managed to get it running, probably coincidence. my not being a pro and may not recognise a worn needle i just swapped it to try it in case the previous owner may have changed it or something. I still have the other needle!

Well I'm glad to hear you've retained the original. I would put the original back in and like I said, do the carb. cleaning and a new kit. Needle valves don't come with carb. kits but I have been able to get them as a seperate item at my OMC dealer when needed. Take a very good look at the point of the needle. If you can see a ridge or that it's bent or any wear marks you should try to get a new one. It is very important to the success of getting you motor to idle. On the other hand, it should last forever so don't change it as a maintenance item. Once you get the carb. done I think you will be up and running. Let us know. Rick.

The so called original needle has a blunt flat point and the others i have have sharp points to them, another reason i tried a different needle, does this sound normal?

No it isn't normal. Probably caused by being turrned in too tight or dropped on the floor. Rick.

So how does it work, do i get a number off the carb and that will tell me exactly what type of needle that should be in there and then order a new one?

If you have the model # for your engine that should work at a dealer. Having the carb. number might help but then again it might be the part # for the bowl that you see. Give it a try and see what the dealer says. Rick.
