Johnson BJ90SLEDR Gearshift question

I have adjusted the shift rod height as per the recommendations and have just fitted new cables.

I have adjusted the cable adjustment so as to try and get both forward and reverse to engage as the control lever goes into the forward or reverse detent.

They are both very close however tend to jump a little if you are to slow in pushing the lever into gear.

Are there any further adjustments on the remote control box that can help this or do I have the beginnings of a problem?

It is reccomended that you make quick positive shifts. I f you don't, the shifter dogs in the lower unit tend to chatter and will eventually round the corners and then will jump at speed under a load. I had a 60 Johnson that was set too fast at idle from the factory and caused the dogs to round off.
If your adjustments are correct, you can still get some jump if you shift too slow. This is normal but you shouldn't shift slowly. Also be sure your idle is not too fast!

The proper adjustment procedue is not a guess and by gosh procedure. Disconnect both cable ends at the engine. Put the control box lever in neutral and make sure the shift linkage on the engine is in neutral. Then bring the end of the shift cable up to its attachment point on the shift linkage. Don't connect it. If the cable end and attachment point on the linkage do not line up exactly adjust the trunion (the plastic adjuster) until they do line up exactly without any pushing or pulling. They need so slip together. Then secure the cable. Repeat the process for the throttle cable but you need to hold the throttle linkage firmly against the idle stop while making the adjustment. Again, do not push or pull on anything. The two attachment points need to simply slip together. Thats the only adjustment needed or provided.
