Hi, I tried to rebuild the carbs on my johnson 175 88 model year. the lower one is dripping fuel out the front it seems when the motor is tilted up. It did that before. Also its not running too good. The guy at classic marine in Orlando sold me a quicksilver carb kit that said omc on it. I noticed the jets were bigger so I went ahead and put them in. It also seems like the needle and seat were magnatized when the float lifts up it clicked a little? I wish I had gone with a omc rebuild kit instead. I paid almost 60 dollars for the three kits. Now it's not idling too good and fuel is everywhere. Back to the starting boad

Regardless of the original problem which sounded like a sticking float, I would put the original jets back in. Just clean them out with solvent and air. Bigger jets are just gonna screw up your fuel mixture and make it run rich. Unless you have modified the engine to pump more air(bigger displacement or super chargers or something) you can't dump more fuel in there and expect it to burn better. You just need a clean OEM size jet. Check the settings on the carb floats there are lots of posts here on how. Also get a manual if you don't already have one. Good luck.

What brand of carbuator kits are they? Most carb kits for Johnson/Evinrude do not come with main or idle jets.

The Kit I ended up with was quicksilver part number 879055 marine carb kit. replaces omc 39055, 398526 424888, 435443, 439076 Made by mercury marine. I was a sucker for that one. <br />Big Johnson 175 hp 1988

Hey thanks good info for my file. I noticed however the main jet I took out of there under the needle and the new quicksilver part has no number on them. I will just put in the ones that were in there and see what happens. The instructions say invert the float bowl and check levelness. So does that mean to turn it upside down from the way it sits on the carb then measure? If so I did it backwards and no wonder it's flooding.
