i have a 1984 70 hp johnson sea horse. it has started to give me a problem taking off from idle. as i give it gas, it tries to die but if i push the key in it will clear out and go. sometimes also gives me a hard time starting until i choke it. it just started to do this a couple of weeks ago and i have just been dealing with it but would like to fix it. any help would be great. thnx

Re: johnson choke problem?

sadam68,The fact the the engine will respond when you push in on the key primer is indicative of a fuel restricted carburetor/s.Best to just remove them one at a time and thoroughly clean all of the fixed orifices.Pay particular attention to the small opening in the carb bowl pickup tubes and low speed jets. They are prone to gummy restrictions ,particularly if engine has set out of use for a spell. Some good carburetor cleaner ,compressed air(if you have access) and use of an indexed set of tip cleaners will assist the procedure.

Once complete, make certain that the carb linkage roller is aligned on center with the factory scribe line on the fiber throttle cam and "just touching" when the controls are in the neutral position.
