The throttle lever is very stiff can't move lever forward to fast. Its moves fine to slow. Does the control box have lube points or take apart and look inside posible? Everything appears fine at engine.????

Re: johnson controls throttle cable

What HP and year motor?

There's a throttle tension knob right below the keyswitch. (single throttle/shift control)

The control box separates into two halves, don't worry nothing is spring loaded to jump out at ya, but do be a little careful with it. The plastic throttle control surfaces should have plenty of grease. Trailer axle grease works fine.

If this is a new installation, check the cable routing, could be too sharp a curve or something.

I appreciate the tip about greese . I think I will open up control box and see if its dry. The motor is a 58 johnson 35 hp. Thanks again to the Admiral from Texas

well, be careful, I'm only familiar with the new control boxes from, say, the last 35 years or so -- I can't speak with authority about the 1958 models. Were it mine, I'd go ahead and check it out though. Doubt it's very different.

Probably the cable. Not a lot to lube inside those old control boxes - just a few sliding surfaces. If the cable moves hard, the next thing to break will be the nylon insert inside the box which the cable attaches to. Before you break it, get a new cable. Cables are easier to come by than those nylon pieces inside the box.
