Hi all

I recently took delivery of my boat wch came with a 1997 johnson 130hp bj130tleub

when started takes between 30 seconds and 1min the worst case to get the telltale to have water coming out.once it does its not a strong stream a bit more than a dribble.

what I noticed was a gush of water coming out of this joint in the lower leg that doesnt look normal.. its just above the top gearbox oil fill screw.
as per picture below. I have 2 new thermostats and an impellor that have not been put in yet . what do you guys think? thanks in advance..

sounds like weak impeller, i would do the impeller and the stats, while you have them out flush the motor from the stat opening. there are several places they leak when on muffs. especially at the joint.

Re: Johnson cooling problem

ok I have pulled apart the pump.. there seems to be abnormal wear on the plate and there is cracks in the fins however does not seem that bad.

however one oring tha sits on top of the cup was squashed as if previous install was done wrong.

and the oring that sits between bottom plate and impellor was not there also.
what do you guys think ?

The water pump housing, impeller and bottom plate all need to be replaced. It looks like none of them had been serviced since 1997

Thanks tx1961whaler it looks like it however there are receipts for water pumps being replaced by previous owner ,

I have replaced bottom plate and all orings and have bolted pump back on leg.

my other question before i put her back is there a seal or something that goes on the water pump outlet wich joins to the water tube on powerhead ?
I am presuming nothing goes there just slides up into water tube?

thanks

Make sure you have the seal over the shift shaft when it goes back on. The water taking a while to exit the overbaord line is normal. Loopers have a rather large water cavity to fill. And yes, the overboard line will not have a lot of pressure. You should show good pressure on your gauge. 3-5 lbs at idle and 20+ at wot depending on which pump you used.

Re: Johnson cooling problem

if you are talking about the seal on the shift rod then yes its there and i have not touched it. it seems easy to move around though...

I realised it takes long to fill the powerhead up with water when i was flushing it i stuck a hose up the water pipe and it took a very long time for water to come out the thermostat openings..
Unfortunately i dont have a water pressure guage on the engine... thanks..

Re: Johnson cooling problem

I am sorry that I did not see your question about the water pump outlet before you had it all back together. Both of my Johnson motors have a rubber grommet installed on the outlet that the water tube slides into when you bolt up the lower unit. Looking at the BRP parts website, it looks like your motor should have one also. You do seem to have a good volume of water on the muffs though.
