I just bought a 1969 Evinrude 40 hp electra shift. It came with a johnson electramatic control.
My question is this will the johnson control shift the evinrude into forward and reverse.
I amnew to this site so I hope that this is the right place for this question.
If this will work how would I ck to see if the little switch works.
Also does anyone have a wiring diagram that would show how the control box hooks up to the ign.

Yes the control will work on your '69 Evinrude 40 Lark. There are 3 wires going to the switch. Blue, green, and something else, according to year. The blue and green go to the motor and the other goes to the "A" or "ACC" terminal on the key switch.

With it all hooked up, check the voltage on the blue and green wires. There should be battery voltage on the green wire when in forward and battery voltage on the blue wire when in reverse. ONLY!!! If you get something else, something is wrong. The Hydro-Electric switch looks just like it, but gives different results, and may severely damage the motor.

If I find that I don't get any voltage at the wires coming out of the control box then would the problem be that the little switch in the throttle control box is bad.
If so where would I buy one.

That would indicate a bad switch. But don't trash it till you check the voltage input to the switch. 12V, nothing out, equals no good. Buy one??? heh-heh. They are getting hard to find, and a new one carries a list price of about $500. Marineengine.com has them in stock for only $507.18 each.

You could also use a three way toggle switch mounted close to the throttle to bypass the switch if it's bad. $500, WOW !!!!

Well I have got back to the electric shift Johnson control. I opened the case up and looked to see what I was getting into. Lookes pretty simple. Disassembled to cleand up and test the switch. It has 3 wires. green blue and red. Red has a eye connector, so I assume this was the hot wire. Took a ome meterand checked current. Got a good reading as I switched wires and toggled the switch. It apears to be in good working order.
Now on to checking the rest of the wiring. Question how to test wires going to the coil in the lower unit. If I hook a battery up to the terminals and introduce 12 volts to one of the shift wires should this engage the prop. Right now the prop turns freely. Or is there some other check that I should make before using a battery.

You can check the resistance. Should be 8 ohms between green wire and ground (wires disconnected at powerhead), same for blue. and yes, applying 12V to each wire should cause it to go into gear. NEVER apply voltage to both wires at the same time while running.

"In gear" while not running means the prop won't turn in one direction, but will turn the other direction with considerable resistance.

One common problem with those motors is the cable going down to the lower unit either burning up from engine overheating, or simply rotted out from age. Either can cause voltage to be applied to both wires at the same time. If that happens while running, it may (probably) will bust either a clutch spring or drive shaft.

The cables are no longer made. Good luck

If I get the 8 ohms through both wires then does that tell me that the coil is ok?. Then if it won,t go into gear when 12 volts applied that means a mechanical.
What might cause that?

Is there some place in the motor housing that you can ck the wires that go down and connect to the coils. To see if they are ok or not.
I have ck wiring through the cable back to where the connect to the wire that go down. Everything is good to that point. If the coils are bad are they expensive to buy.
