I've got a '60 Johnson 18 horse, been getting it completely running tip top shape. You guy's have done wonders on helping me figure out this thing. Need to know if I should go with an electric start, or fix the pullstarter. The pull starter spring busted, and I was wondering where I could get one.... I can fix it with the manual, just need to know where to get a spring. I'd like to get the electric start goin, but the starter bendix tends to move up when the motor is at full throttle causing it to hit the flywheel make an ungodly noise, and throw sparks. Whats goin on there? Bad spring or what? It only happens at full throttle. Should I just get it outta there and save weight and use the pull start? The motor fires right up, so a pull starter isn't a big deal. Thanks guys

Re: Johnson Electric Start, or fix the pull start?

Does the whole starter need to be replaced? Or can the old one that is in there be fixed? It turns the flywheel just fine, and starts the motor right up, but when the motor is WOT the bendix moves up even with the flywheel. This causes the two to strike. If I did get the starter fixed, or got a new one... How am I going to wire this thing? I have a solenoid, but I need a keyswitch. Which keyswitch should I get? I have five prongs on the motor, two for the starter, two for the points and condensors, and one for the electric choke. Now how to wire all this up. Thanks guys
