I'm looking to buy a boat and motor and will be test driving one today. I don't know anything about motors. This Javelin has a 1997 Johnson fast strike 175. Is this a motor to stay away from, or if kept maintained should cause no problems? When testing what do I need to look for as far as motor integrity?

Compression 100psi+ all cyls and within 10% of each other.
Top end 5300-5600 RPM
Smooth transition thru range
Clean lower unit fluid (beware if it appears new).
General appearance and cleanliness.
Maintenance records.
Price.
After that, just make the payments, maintain, and pray!!

Good Luck

Outdoor, this is a fine model and there are not particular problems related to it, and as angus says check compression, oil condition in the lower unit (the screw magnets)how engages, and give it a good run, check temperature at iddle and at wot, not just a 10 minute trial if you and the owner are able to go for a long run DO IT, and as any used item there is always some good luck involved
