i have a 1991 johnson faststrike 150 i dont have a clue what is wrong. i can run it hard all day at 5400 rpm and all of the sudden it will drop to about 4000 rpm and miss and spudder then get back up the 5500. Then when ya stop to fish and start it back up it takes it 1000 yards to plane out and throttle to the floor only 4000 rpm. changed plugs 2 times. Send all info please

I am not a 2 cycle mechanic, but I would first determine how old the fuel filter is it could be starving for fuel. However it sounds like you may be loosing one piston, it may be a bad plug wire or a loose or dirty plug wire connection. A good inspection is in order. Also be careful when reassembling the engine cover. It can knock loose plug wires. If nothing is found, I would take it to a reputable dealer.

I did here years ago that power packs were a problem when OMC came out with the fast strike/intruder 150 motor in the early 90's.

fishalot

Re: johnson faststrike 150 problems

Fuel filters and lines are a good place to start. So are the plug wires as they can allow the spark to jump to ground before getting to the plug.. A decent test for this is to run the engine with the cover off at night (in neutral and low speed) and see if the spark is jumping out from the plug wires/powerpacks anywhere.

It could also be a clogged carb/s (main jet/s specifically).
Be wary though of a clogged carb, as a lean condition on one of the cylinders may cause that cylinder to burn/sieze.

Feul pump could also be the culprit.

Also check the integrity of every feul hose from the tank to the carbs, looking for possible leaks or kinks.

Thes are just some guesses from my experience..Hope it helps.. Maybe one of the experts can elaborate where I have left off.

Re: johnson faststrike 150 problems

Up until recently I owned a 1996 115HP (V4)Faststrike. I say up until recently because now the motor is sitting at the wreckers due to a problem inherent with this particular model of motor. The first sign of the problem was exactly as you have described with your motor (ie running like a charm most of the time, dropping revs etc).

The problem surrounds the exhaust "u-tube" or I think the proper name is "exhaust tube inner". Instead of seand a burst of pure exhaust back into the engine as per design, a small amount of water settles at the lowest point of the tube and when the hot exhaust hits it, the result is a burst of exhaust / steam shooting into the powerhead. This causes condensation (water) to build up in my case in #4 cylinder. My motor had less than 170 hours on it and the repair bill was in excess of $7,000 (AUS), hence the retirement to the wreckers.

OMC or Bombardier whatever they call themselves were only too happy to offer absouletly no help at all. This may not apply to your motor, but it would be worth a look.

Snapshot look at www.screamandfly.com , there is a post about sleeve leakakge on the mercury outboards, some of there fixes may work on the V4 Johnson.

The "u-tube" problem was on the V4's. When you pull the plugs on your 150 does #1 look different? What plugs are you using? What fuel?

Good luck!
