Johnson fat 50

Is this outboard a 2 or 3 cylinder? The reason i ask is that i just bought a boat with this motor on it and its too cold to do any work on it. My other question is which manual to get. I see the seloc manuals, but i don't see the one for 2 cylinder engine. Thank you for your help again.

That was OMC"s first v-4 engine.

Why do you say it is a "fat 50" if you don't even know what model it is?

Johnson has made 50HP engines over the years with 2, 3 and 4 cylinders. Only the 4 cylinder (V4) was called a "fat" 50.

We must have the model number to be of any help. Look for a plate riveted to the transom mount.

I don't recall any three cylinder 50's, when was that?

Sorry i forgot to mention its a 58 or 59 model. It has a V4 and i can't recall the rest of the numbers. I do know its a 58 or 59 for sure

Fat 50 is usually refered to as heavy and when compared to its little brother
35 at 125 to 138 lbs the 50s 197-205 would seem heavy.But compared to
todays Evinrude Etec 2 cyl.2 stroke at 240 lbs the fatty seems light.
the 59 w is 209-216.
The 1960 75hp weighed in at 216.As stated the 50 is a big gas hog or perhaps a gas waster is more accurate.This can be moderated some with careful tuning ,operation and a couple of modifications.

What mod.'s will make it use less gas?

If you re-route the wasted (pooled) gas to go back into the tank instead of getting dumped out the exhaust it'll make a difference.
