UPDATE: So I woke up this morning and decided to drive the two hours back to the shop to see if maybe I could get lucky and see my cowl cover in at least one piece for me to put back together. About 15 miles from the shop I found it on the side of the road on a stretch of road that is very low traveled. It has a few chips but that is all...whew

I have a 1964 18hp Johnson model FD-18E. First I would love to know what the 'E' stands for. Second and most important, I am now in the need for a motor cover. I just lost mine somewhere along the 2 hour drive home from my shop after working hard on my engine and boat in preparation for fishing tomorrow.

I have done some reading and from what I understand this engine is the same as the 20, 25 and 35 hp models with the exception of the intake and carb, can someone confirm or deny this? Obviously if this is the case I am very interested in moving on up to a 25 or 35 carb for the ever elusive horsepower increase.

I have read this forum many times and actually had registered a long time ago but for the life of me cannot remember my info...so starting fresh again.

Thank you for your time

Am I really tired or did I miss a link? Thanks for the response Steve, maybe if I am missing something on my end it will get fixed before I wake...and if you forgot to add the link then maybe we both need sleep...lol

One more time: The E stands for the Johnson Chief Engineer's daughter "Elizabeth". Actually, it indicates a mid-year engineering change if there was any change. In this case, there was no change. They are all E.

One more time, again: The 18, 20, and 25 are not just carburetor changes. Especially the 25, which is major different inside, with different pistons, cylinder head and crankshaft. The 18 and 20 are pretty much alike, but you will never notice the 2hp increase if you convert it. And the 35? Hah, no way.

You might try these sites too.

engine blade and prop.com
outboard-parts.com
laingsoutboards.com
tcoutboard.com
fairwindsmarina.com
salvagemarine.com
marinepartsoutlet.com
outboardexchange.com
Superior Marine (800-338-9281)
budgetboats.net
americanoutboard.com
piratemarinesalvage.com
trixieslanding.com

tcoutboards.com

As far as the cover goes. The 25hp didn't come out till 1969, so it may or may not work on yours. The 20hp came out in 1966, so you have a better chance of a cover that will work.

timsoutboard.com may have a cowl for it. They most always have what I need for J/E motors.. And quick ship/reasonable $$.
