I'm having some trouble with an engine I'm working on. I just bought it from my neighbor who had it sitting in his garage for a number of years. Despite this, its actually in very good shape. I've been working on it for a couple of days and aside from coming to life for about three seconds one time it hasn't turned over at all. Another neighbor came over today and helped me determine that there was no spark. I put in brand new spark plugs, the multimeter shows current passing through the coils, and I sanded all the paint off the magnets under the flywheel (there are no points).

What I did notice is that one wire is missing. There is a lack of paint where its screw once was, but there is no screw or wire to go to the contact. Based on its counterpart on the other half of the motor, it should run directly to the lower coil. I ran a wire from the missing contact to the coil and still had no spark. What I'm afraid of is that in all my cranking over the past few days (probably a hundred pulls of the cord) I was trying to pass current through a short, and may have fried one of the magneto(?) coils under the flywheel. Keep in mind, I'm brand new to motors (but not electromechanics) and don't know if that's a possibility. I've attached some pics, any advice?

You can not crank these motors with out grounding the high tension lead, your ignition probably had trouble before you got it so don't feel bad, genrally one side only has died. If you got the bucks $250 should get yeah going, find a CDI dealer and you might get a better deal for a complete Stator.

And welcome to the club

So in lay terms, its fried? No way for me to fix it myself?

chances are high that its fried, but you might want to contact Ed Stoller @ www.enginesandmagnets.com and see what he has to say about it, or at the very least donate it to science.

yep, thats it. chances are your Pulse Transformers are good they generally do not fail and if they do there is a OMC part, you need to bone up on timing it, hopefully CDI will send you some info on that, if not buy the shop manual

Check out Tommy 2 Strokers link in the Eska files.

If you buy that new one I hope you donate the old one to science

Tyler, you have never showed us where in the circuitry you tapped into the trigger coils. How about a write up with pics

The day those pics come up will be a grand one indeed.

Re: Johnson Gamefisher 15HP - No Spark

ok will do , bear with me i have 3 kids under 5 years old.
but i cut away some of the potting material then isolated the trigger coil from the rest of the old eletronics and ran the wires to my new board. same with the charge coil.
just give me a day or two i'll make a write up, i am a hands on person so explaining how i did it is harder thats i thought

Man points, indeed, Mr. C. Truckintyler, you have already scored massive manpoints for having snatched that ignition from the jaws of death, in the face of short people. I'm a really verbose individual, and i gotta tell ya - they're not crappin' when they say a picture is worth a 1,000 words. If ya happen to have a camera handy............. If not, we'll hammer and tong our way thru a verbal description of your fix. I just got a v-hull, and I'm about to get a really low hour 9.9 with a dead ignition for dirt. My new hull simply cries out for that 9.9 Either you can get me thru fixing this ignition, or I defecate $250 for a CDI replacement stator. I'm betting on ya heavy, truckintyler! PS I hope every body has a kick***** weekend.

Would I need to replace the magneto for this to work? Or will the fried one do?

Re: Johnson Gamefisher 15HP - No Spark

He's talking about partially de-potting the original dead stator, and soldering in some leads to the trigger and charge coils that are encased, (potted), in those rounded black thingys on the stator plate. Those leads will run to a circuit he found and fabricated on the net to replace the rest of the circuitry in the potting. As he says, it's a project best suited to somebody that's 'handy with electronics'. Otherwise, you have to find a dealer for CDI ignition products, and get a rebuilt stator for about $250. Once in a blue moon, a working used one turns up, but I never saw the value in a known loser design with a stupendous failure rate.

That was my first time messing with electronics , I mean I still was already good at fixin things.
Eletronics for dummies helped alot too

isolate the trigger coil and minimize the depotting and trace slashing and make it easy, then show proof in the water, then you get "man points"

Well, I found a new stator for $180. It came in the mail yesterday, I put it in, and this puppy is alive again!
