Once again this 1977 Johnson 115. Finally rebuilt the lower unit. Now the gears are fine but it acts like it needs fuel. When you give it gas it justs boggs and dies. I you put it in gear it will put around but any type of acceleration it will bog and die. I can get it to go if I manually play with the choke. The ball gets somewhat soft after it ideals for a few. I also noticed I could pump on the ball as it was running and it will start to idel a little smoother. I have cleaned and rebuilt the carbs but I have a filling it is the fuel pump. I pulled it and just cleaned it. Every thing looked fine but don t know what to look for to tell if it is bad. Compression 120 on all.

I have a 79 115 that was exibiting the same thing.
Might check that your timer base is not sticking.

Id start by checking that the tank is venting.

As well as the fuel lines are in good condition.

Also if an onboard tank, check the anti siphon valve.

IMHO, if the ball and spring are still in it.

I'd take them out ,and throw them as far as possible.

So, you won't be tempted to put them back in. LOL
