I have a 1966 Johnson Golden Meteor 100hp on a 17.5 ft Glasspar Cuddy Cabin. I cannot get this motor to fire and have been given a "guesstamate" of $900.0 to rebuild this motor.
Any suggestions appreciated from rebuilding motor, to purchase of different motor and why, to using as a boat anchor would be appreciated
Thanks

What is the problem ?
What do you have ?
compression ? if you got it ,it´s hope
Spark ? if not , easy to fix
Fresh gass ? ...
Good battery ...
If you got all abowe it shuld start , if not , what is missing .
Things to do :
Clean carburator , check fuses/wires ,plugs...

If you don´t want to use money on the engine , send me a mail , I need parts :D .
I you want to use money , I know where you can get some of the parts , you might need :)

Re: Johnson Golden Meteor 100 Not Firing

I cannot get the motor to fire. I have good voltage (new battery) but no fire at the plugs. I used a spark tester on the plugs and nothing. Everything works (or at least seems to) such as the electric choke, electric shift. I have power coming off the voltage regulator but I am not sure at the coil.
I have spoke to numerous "marine mechanics" and the dealers tell me they will NOT work on anything this old, and other individuals tell me that they will guarantee nothing but I will still have to pay for labor. I understand paying for work, but for some strange reason I like to get something in return for my money.

Ok you can crank the engine but no spark...
clean the points ,adjust them to 020
clean the inside of the distributor inspect for cracks
Do the same on the rotor .
Then inspect the coil for cracks , and if you can , messure it ,Primary resistance is 10 - 100 ?? ohm.
Secondary continuity is 1 - 2,5 ?? k ohm .I don´t know how mutch it schuld be but compare whith an auto coil.
The coil can be replaced by an auto coil ,I have used one for years .
You can also messure the spar plug wire , messure from inside the distributor ,compare all wires.
Check spark plug , clean and adjust it to 030 .
One last thing , do you have current on the + pol on the coil ? , you shuld have it when the ignition is on .
You shuld also inspect the + wire to the coil ( RESISTOR wire red/with sigle red strip ( 1 ohm )))

And if you can´t get it running ,my offer still stands :)

Droll hit on all the important checks, but don't forget to inspect the carbon "button" and spring inside the distributor cap and the rotor condition.

its your CDI pulse pak ignition. The black box on the back .You can buy them , as I did , for about 350 . Easy to install though. If you have given up on it though . EDIT: PM me.

Unless I'm mistaken, the '66 doesn't have a pulse pack.

Check that distributor rotor. They arc through to the shaft. Just a very tiny pin-hole.
