Johnson Golden Meteor 100hp - is it a 66 or 67?

I picked up this Johnson meteor today for $50, with controls and all the wiring. I think it's a 66 since it has the flying saucer head an no black box in the back, but there was no junction box in the boat, and I read that there was supposed to be. I removed all it myself and saw no sign of it. Anyone know if that box is critical? I've got the igintion key, and the control box with cables.

I'd like to get a service manual for it, the other threads I've found about this motor all tell me to look at ken kook for the manual or ebay, but I have had no luck. There was also mention that evinrude made the exact same engine, but what was the name or model number of that one?

I don't have high hopes that'll it run again, but it'll be good to tinker and learn on. I won't be surprised if it has low compression, but there was some compression and the pistons move. My mechanic buddy is going to see it tomorrow ad run a compression test, so we'll see. Worst case I can part it out, or scrap it and come out ahead. Lots of aluminum of this thing!

Looks like a 1966 with the battery ignition. 1967 had battery cd.

Yes, thank you. I found the model number and it's 66 for sure. I read in another post that there is supposed to be a junction box in the boat, but I didn't see one when I pulled the motor and controls. Do you know anything about a junction box? I appreciate your help, it'd be great to see this thing run!

I got confirmation there is no box for a 66, but there was one for the 65. So I got it all, hopefully I can get a stand built tomorrow and get it out of the truck.

Keep us posted. Interesting to see the out come. Do a compression test first and check the g/c oil.

Yes, compression test next. Edit that, engine stand first. My mechanic buddy is into it, he'd never seen the inside of a outboard and pretty much figured it out, but was amaze at the engineering. Still some issues as wiring is messed up, but from initial inspection we think it could fire, but I gotta build that stand to first. On it tomorrow.

what's g/c stand for?

I built 90% of a stand today and will pull the motor out of the truck tomorrow - hopefully. One of the tilt hydraulics is leaking, wasn't before, maybe because it's laying it's side?? I also found a guy who is parting out one complete, so parts galore, prices unknown...

g/c is the gearcase. Yours is an Electramatic type gearcase, which has 2 coils in it; one for forward and one for reverse. Make sure of the compression first, and if you want to proceed reviving this beast check the gearcase to see if it shifts. No use getting the engine running if it won't shift, and there are some expensive parts in that gearcase if it's broken.

Thank you for the advice TX, much appreciated. I've got a mechanic buddy and we are going to compression test this week if there is time. I'll update as soon as we do that.

We have the controls, and shifted it from from N-F-R, he was amazed the the distributor moved, basically adjusting timing to increase throttle, then reversing spark timing to reverse. I'm guessing the g/c is in the lower unit? do you have to remove it, or is there an access panel? Any tips are much appreciated, especially things to watch out for.

Gearcase is at the bottom, the 'bullet' looking thing behind the prop. There are two screws for removing and adding gear oil. The Electramatics take a specificc type of oil, called Type C. Don't worry about removing it, yet.

The g/c shifts electrically (Electramatic, get it?) so the shift lever moving means very little. Should be three wires coming out of the control box, red green blue. Follow these wires to under the cowl (hood) usually to the right side of the engine. Should be disconnects of some sort just before the wires go down into the lower unit. You can test the coils there. Green wire is forward (green fer GO) and blue is reverse. The red wire goes to the battery or the key switch, or maybe to the hot side of the starter solenoid.

Check out marineengine.com for parts, a lot is still available, some are very expensive.

Do a search here on iboats for Electramatic, lots more info.

Good Luck ;)

I found some good info, but I have a testing question, If I hook up the green wire to the battery, do I then just touch the ground to the battery and listen for something like the gear engaging? or prop turning?

If it doesn't turn, then what is the first step to test further? Anything I need to look out for?
