Hi all, i am extremely excited to have found this forum, i know there is alot of knowledge out there that i am seeking. So im hoping to soak some of it up.

First off, i've been to about 5 different sites trying to locate the year of my 150. I cannot find one that corresponds to my model number.

The model # is J150STLACA. In the lookup codes i found have no "A" for year code, unless i am somehow missing correct order. Even if the code was " ac" or "ca" there is still no " A "

2ndly, i have no clue on motor hours or past service, Thou the motor is clean and was definitly take care of. The boat has sat for 3 years. 19 ft checkmate. Dead of winter here, and i practically stole the boat for the price i got it for.

I have not started it yet and will not untill i get some feedback on suggestions.I plan on rebuilding carbs, water pump, fuel & VRO pumps. Was there an update for the VRO?

Any other important area's to check or rebuild on these gt150's. Soon as i am able to locate the year, then i will start ordering parts. I believe a proper rebuild is in store since i do not know its past. I have not checked compression yet, but will when i get a chance.

thank you all in advance, your help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Johnson GT150 questions.

1988, Marc the last A is indicates a change of the mfgr line, on the parts list the will be a note for possibly a parts change for one of tow items. here are the correct manuals for that motor.

=models.main&year=1988&ID=78287"

i would start with a compression and spark test, check the lower unit for water. then see if you can get it started. if it starts do the water pump. and what else you find. 1988 is just a teenager.

you also my want to go premixed gas, as the new VRO pump is expensive. the oil side of yours is not rebuildable.

Re: Johnson GT150 questions.

Sounds like you are headed in the right direction marc, good luck and follows TD's advice.

If the spark and compression test checks out ok, I would change out the plugs, rebuild the carbs, change the impeller and service lu oil with new drain and vent gaskets.

There are many good threads here in the FAQ section that you may find interesting, and welcome to iboats.

Re: Johnson GT150 questions.

The 1988-1992 models came with the VRO2 pump and should be tagged that way. That is the latest of the true VRO pumps which were replaced by the OMS pumps after 1992.

As long as the VRO2 pump works it will pump premixed fuel/oil if you want to use it that way. If you want to upgrade to keep the oil tank, there are excellent upgrade kits available, and yes they are expensive.

Re: Johnson GT150 questions.

thanks for the quick replys everyone. I am willing to spend the money on an upgrade pump. Mixing gas will be a pain in the butt for the most part. Not to keen on idea of filling the tank then adding the oil, not being able to properly mix & agitate the fuel & oil.

thank you for the links there on the proper manuals. Wasnt hoping to spend $80 on a service manual thou.

Ezeke, now i should be looking for the vro2 pumps, or will the oms work as well? i would like to get a head start on things as soon as i can.

Re: Johnson GT150 questions.

You want the most up to date pump available. It will be OMS, but see your dealer for the latest.

If you prefer working/buying online, I would recommend Bill Kelly at Maxrules. com. If you email him, he will get you up to state-of-the-art. Busy guy, but he has always come through for me.

gt150 followup. What cleaning products to use?

gt150 followup. What cleaning products to use?

Gary thanks for that link. I had searched e-bay before, the thing was i saw a few manuals like this, and i thought they seemed more of a "general" manual, and not specific enough for my perticular model. But i guess i was wrong, they contain all the model numbers on the inside cover! Not like some of the others that list the model number on the front cover.

Ezeke, thanks for that VRO link, it clears up some misconceptions that i've read around. I will be searching around in the next weeks for a deal, if i have to pay retail i will, but i bet i can find a deal or 2 knowing if they are the correct ones.

Also, anyone please, i used to detail cars on the side, so i am quite able to put ONE hell of a shine on a car with my buffer. But i have yet to touch fiberglass, after my first cleaning of the surface, with all the products out there, what product should i use to polish the surface with. I know there are some " fiberglass" polishes out there, but are they the same as say Meguiars? If not if gonna run the meguiars auto polish, then wax. And as for waxes, anything else suggested.

Any suggestions on what paint to use on the lower end, i was planning on sanding, cleaing, primering with Johnsons Zinc Phospate, then using Johnsons spray color match paint. Sound like the correct approach?

Thank you all, even thou its to dam cold to work on it, im getting ready anyways.

Re: Johnson GT150 questions.

You are right on target with the paint method. One light coat of Zinc Chromate primer then several coats of paint. If you are using the Tempo paint get the clear to go over the color..it looks good.
Meguires makes a good fiberglass restoration kit as well as 3M.You will get many opinions on waxes.
Do a search in the faqs for fiberglass restoration, you will find plenty to read..;)
If that manual on Ebay does not work out send me a PM and i'll get with my guy in NY,he can get one...:D

Welcome aboard Marc!!

Re: Johnson GT150 questions.

Ok, checked into the VRO abit more, finally warmed up outside a little. Now i pulled the cover off the motor. There was a tag on the vro labeled vro2 alcohol resistant. The stamp on the back of the vro body reads 174435, by the brp catalog says 0174564. It is a 3 wire, and looks like it has the black pulse. I know it needs updated. What what should i believe? the brp catalog right?

thanks all

Re: Johnson GT150 questions.

150S indicates it's a 150 hp XP or GT, a GT in your case. The TL is for power tilt & trim - long (20") shaft. In this case the next A indicates alternate color. It should be probably metalic charcoal. That A replaces the normal C. The next C indicates 8 and in this case it means the motor is a 1988 model. The last A doesn't mean a whole lot. There may or may not be a reference to it in a parts catalog. Basically a production run.

Re: Johnson GT150 questions.

The BRP Parts diagrams on the BRP parts catalog site are basically as they were when the motor was produced.

To get the updates you need to see a dealer or check an online one who has the superseding parts and part numbers identified on a website.

I know that ishopmarine .com has been known to keep their listings pretty current.

0174435 and 0174564 have both been superseded by part number 5007423. You may find one of the old part number units on line or in a parts bin somewhere, but if it were me, I would only want the new one - 5007423. That replaces 5004559, listed in the above referenced article at Continuous Wave, as well.

Thank you everyone for your help. Getting excited. went to the hartford, ct boat show today.

Re: Johnson GT150 questions.

Manual may say 5500...you're gonna have to trust me on this, but prop for 5800 with a normal load.

Johnson GT150 modifications.

Johnson GT150 modifications.

Hey everyone its been awhile and i got one hell of a pile of parts waiting to be installed. Like alot of others out there im just waiting on the weather to get warmer.

johnson 150 modifications? im not looking to bore or plain the motor, but was wondering what kind of simple mods can be done to this motor to give her a little more kick?

Starting with some boyesen reeds and going from there. Someone told me hte head was the same from 150-225hp. basically only difference is Jetting and exhuast manifolds. Is that true?

Also i ordered the recent carb rebuilds from johnson, but i believe there are no new jets in the kit.

i thought i read some where that since its and 88 motor it is jetted for the gas from then. Now that gas is much different from then, it should be rejetted. Any thoughts? Would it go up a size or 2 or down a size?

Thanks everyone.

Re: Johnson GT150 questions.

The XP/GT engines had a number of 175 hp components from the factory. The larger carbs and better heads, hp lower mounts, louvered cowls, etc. These 150 factory engines usually put out 10% more hp than rated on the cowl. You should not need to rejet for "today's fuel," but you may have to change carb jets when you put the composite reeds in-the reed directions should tell you what to do. When you are putting the reeds in, I would add the intake filler blocks (NLA) that the old 200 and 235 engines used. They will help hp somewhat. To improve on the heads you have, you might have to go back to the old 200 heads (456/457) or the small bore 235 (872/873).
