I have a 1990 Johnson GT175 V6 which runs fine, but after the engine is shut off it the 2-stroke oil continues to to flow slowly into the fuel system and drips out - in a considerable quantity for several days from the carbs into the engine casing. With the engine in full tilt postion (for towing) the oil drips into the engine well. This also seems to be the cause of excessive smoke on start-up. Could this be caused by syphoning? - Is there a valve in the system which should prevent this?

There is no oil pressure without fuel pressure. Could it be oil remaining after the gasoline evaporates? I suspect it's just running out normally which can happen at full tilt. Sooner or later it drips or runs into the motorwell where the gas evaporates leaving the oil behind. Floats jiggling around from vibrations while on the trailer don't help. You might want to consider transporting at lower than full tilt.

Take a paper clip and poke a hole with it into the filler cap seal of the oil reservoir. Poke it through the tiny hole in the cap all the way through the seal.
