Re: johnson hydro/selectric control

There are two different kinds of electric shift.

The original engaged gears with electromagnets that caused a spring to engage the gears. 12v to the green wire gives you forward, 12v to the blue wire gives you reverse. But if an electrical problem occurred, the motor could run but not be able to be shifted into gear.

Then came the next generation. They stay in forward until you supply 12v to the green wire for neutral and to both the green and blue wires for Reverse. So those switches are different than the first generation of shift switches.

Johnson used remote controls with a lever switch inside the control. Evinrude used a pushbutton switch. There are lever switches for the first and second kind of electric shift. There are pushbutton switches for the first and second kind of electric shift. You can use a Johnson control on an Evinrude or an Evinrude control on a Johnson, but they have to be of the same generation.

The easiest way to tell the kinds of shift at a glance is that the first generation had pin drive props and an exhaust snout behind them. The second generation have splined propshafts and exhaust through the prop.

My motor is a (EDIT) 1962 75 hp johnson and is an selectric shift the version you stated first. The control says hydro electric johnson. Is the any way to modify the control so it will work with my motor. Souds like the current wiring of the control could give me one gear but not both.

They didn't have a 75 in 1972, but they had a 3 cylinder 65hp. What is the model number?

The electric shift control box or switch cannot be modified to work in a hydro-electric shift unit, or vise-versa.

On your electric shift, some folks mount a toggle switch on the dash for shifting. You gotta be carefull with it, though, so it does not get touched while the motor is running at speed.
