Anyone know where I can get a base gasket for between the motor and where it mates up to the drive/lower unit. This is where the motor block meets the drive unit.

The motor is a 1956 30hp Javelin.

Thanks!

What's the part number of that gasket. I may have a few left.

Three part gasket is shown as follows:

304545 - Gasket 2 needed for complete set? The parts list says 2 for each motor.

304540 - Baffle Plate

Also looking for a head gasket #302583.

Thanks!

I just checked my remaining stock but unfortunately I have none of those gaskets left.

Myself, I just use the old gasket to trace a new one out of 1/16 inch black felpro gasket material I get at the auto parts store. I use it all the time and have never had a problem.

304545 - is available from your BRP - Johnson/Evinrude dealer ($10.21)
304540 - is NLA
302583 - is available from Sierra ($21.99), but NLA from BRP.

Like JBJ suggests, you can easily cut new gaskets from $8 worth of gasket paper and have lots of material left over.

Re: Johnson Javelin base gasket?

I think vintage outboards is out of the office until Dec. 15th. No shipping till after then. I just called their office on some seals. You guys sparked my interest in the old Javelin and I made a call back home to see if my dad would run out to the dump and see if that old boat was still there. Turns out it wasn't. He pulled it back to his storage building and put it there the day I left it. I guess he knows me better than I thought. I am heading back home within a couple weeks and would like to know what part numbers to use for ordering lower seals. It leaks from the prop area and if I remember right, there's some o-rings, two regular seals, and a long spaghetti looking piece that are used. I remember seeing a kit somewhere, but if I could get it from iboats with the coils I would be much obliged.

Give your dad a big hug from me Imp!!:D:D:D
That IS a funny story!
Just so you know, I was fiddling with a '57 evin. 10hp yesterday and replaced the coil, condenser, and plug wire with known good ones. It still wouldn't fire. I cleaned the points---AGAIN, and she was nice and sparky. I think you will easily fix that spark problem with a little tinkering. I like to test the spark by just loosely putting the flywheel on and rotating it by hand. Even turning it by hand I get it to pop a spark if it's working right. It saves torquing down the flywheel nut and having to reuse the flywheel puller again and again until you get it right, which I find very annoying.
Good luck and thank God for dads!

I had no intention of being on a life's mission of saving wayward Johnson Javelins! I do however congratulate you on reconsidering. I also would encourage you to replace as much in it as possible so far as seals go.

I'm no expert here, but I'm learning quickly. Sea-Way Marine has everything I needed for internal restoration as outlined in the other thread. Vintage Outboard will have all the seals, and sells a handy powerhead gasket kit for 79.00 which has EVERY gasket you could ever need for this model.

I plan to buy an extra set just to have on hand.

I wish you the best with your Javelin. Pls let us know when it is safe at home where it belongs, and how you come out with it.

Re: Johnson Javelin base gasket?

Well, we'll see how it goes. I'll throw some more parts at it and see if they work. I was able to turn it over before and get a consistent spark. There was some chalky stuff on one of the coils, but I never had an intermittent spark. I only had problems when I would fire it up and then it ran on one cylinder. We'll see how long my fuze holds out this time.
