hello, I am new to the forum and I have never owned a boat before and do not really know much about them. I took my boat out in the water the other day and today I was checking on the tilt trim fluid and trimmed the motor all the way up and when I did some oil came out of the motor it is real dark and gray. I just changed the fluid in the lower unit before I took it out and i checked the oil in the lower unit and it does not appear to have any water in the lower unit and the oil in there is a honey color. I am just wondering if any one can tell me what is causing this. 2011-06-26_19-04-14_50.jpg

Smell it and see if it smells like burnt oil and gas mix? If so that is normal. Just unburnt fuel. Welcome to iboats!

Re: Johnson leaking oil

Looks like that on mine. I've never had an engine failure with that unburnt fuel/gas mix coming out of that front hole... There is an exhaust box in the midsection that goes to the lower section, that is sealed with gaskets, but I think there is another route for some exhaust gas and water to fill into the lower unit. You'll see water and smoke coming from the back of the motor near the top of the midsection, that area is not within that box.

Thus the exhaust and water will come out through several holes in the lowerunit and where the lower unit bolts to the midsection.

No worries mate.

Re: Johnson leaking oil

Mine just did that recently as well. I recently un-seized a Johnson 9.9, so a lot of PB Blaster and 2 stroke oil ended up collecting in the power head. Dripped and oozed like that too when I put it back on the stand. Smoked like hell too when I water tested it at first. Ran it for 2 hours and decarbed it. It hasn't leaked any oil since.

Moral of the story, run it good and hard once in a while and you shouldn't have the leaking oil.
