I have a 74 70hp johnson. I was wondering if anyone had pictures or advise on how to take the lower unit apart. I am having trouble with the water pump shaft. Is there a special way in getting it out of the housing. thanks for all the help.

The driveshaft turns the water pump. If that's what you're trying to pull out you have to remove the pinion nut first.

The pinion nut is on the bottom of the driveshaft. You'll have to get the bearing carrier and reverse gear out first.

Are you trying to replace the water pump or take the gearcase apart?

im trying to take the gearcase apart. my reason is when i changed the oil it it there was a peice of metal come out so i decided to take a look and when i pulled the lower unit off i could barely turn it by hand but when i put it in gear (after i got the lower unit off) i could turn the propeller real easy. but could barely turn the water pump rod. thanks for the help.

Turning the driveshaft with the water pump in place would be hard to turn by hand. Not impossible but it won't spin free either. Once you pull the bearing carrier you can remove the snap rings and the reverse gear. Once you do that you can see the teeth on the gears. You'll need to pull the propshaft out to get a good look at the forward side of the clutch dog and the lugs on the forward gear.

There is a puller for that. Before you go any further it might be a good idea to get an OE service manual. It'll show you the puller, the snap ring pliers and explaning any shimming. Pretty simple once you have the tools but can be a bear without them.

If the puller that Dhadley is talking about is the one that I think it is, its also a flywheel puller. Its a stock OMC/BRP item and can be ordered through your local dealer. I paid about $70 for mine about 8 years ago. I don't know the current price, but this puller is very much worth having. The main advantage is that it is designed exactly for the OMC products - you're not buying something that you have to hope will work. You also will not have to go on multiple "missions" to the local hardware store to get the right size/grade bolts for whatever removal procedure you are trying to do.

I highly recommend buying this tool.
