I have a 1988-89 115hp Johnson, which is difficult to start, taking a few minutes of cranking before it will start up; once it is started that first time, it will turn over the first crank everytime after that. I was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions on where I might start to diagnose this problem. I was thinking it may be a fuel system pressure problem, but I am new to this and would appreciate any help. Thanks

Pump ball till firm, pull about half choke, turn key half turn, then crank engine.

Hi DMT<br />Try this, pump your bulb firm, lift warm-up lever, push in on the key, while still pushing in turn it to start. Crank 3 secs, rest, push in and crank 3 more secs. Your motor is equipt with an electric priming system. It is actuated by pushing in the the key switch. You state you pull half choke. Your motor has no choke. I belive you are lifting the warm-up throtle lever (also referd to as fast idle lever). Actuating this lever does open the throtle a small amount, but mainly it sets the timing to the best position for an easy start. Do a searh on this board on primer solenoid, get to know the system, find out about your little red lever and how to use it. let us know how you make out. And of course we will be glad to answer any more questions you have.

I will definatly give the primer a try, and you are correct about what I called the choke, it is the throtle. Thanks alot, I'll let you know how it comes out.

I tried pushing in and holding the key for a few seconds then turning it, and it started alot quicker. Thanks alot for the advice, I had no idea about the primer solenoid.
