Johnson motor identification

I recently came across someone selling a Johnson motor that I'm having trouble identifying. The cowling on the motor says it's a 140hp. Pictures of the motor quite clearly show that it's a V-6 and the seller of the motor is saying that the Model Number indicates it's a 150hp motor. Can anyone shed some light on where the truth is? Seller says it's a 1980 model year and a Model #J150STLCTE. Thanks for your help everyone.

Re: Johnson motor identification

140hp Johnson from 1980 is definately not a V6, it is a V4, according to the serial it is 150hp

Re: Johnson motor identification

1983 150hp, Ed.

Never saw a 140 (V4) bonnet on a V6 before, but it might be some sort of special commercial (the S in the model number) version.

The "TL" in the model number says it has PT&T and is a long (20") shaft.

Go to the JohnnyRude forum and check out Sloopy's thread on identifying Johnnys.

Too bad WI doesn't title outboard engines like TX does. A title would prevent misidentification.

Re: Johnson motor identification

Thanks for the answers gentlemen, I appreciate it. I've seen "commercial rated" engines mentioned on here. What's different about them?
