Hi All
I'm new to this forum and was have a few questions. I recently aquired a 21' Starcraft Mariner with a 90 horse Johnson on it. The motor runs great but the trim will not operate, it looks like the hydrolic cylinder is empty of its oil. Can anyone tell me what type of oil to use. I would also like to know the year of the motor, the model # is J90TLCIM and serial # is C8113889. The trim control is on the side of the throttle/gearshift and will only work one way, you can hear it but nothing happens. Any help would be great
thanks
Mike

Re: johnson motor questions

Welcome to iboats

You have a 1981 there.

Obviously if there is no fluid in the tnt resevoir, she wont lift. You can go to the dealership to get the TNT fluid, or short of that, ATF Dexron III will work.

Re: johnson motor questions

Mike, Normally you tilt the motor all the way up, and lock it up with the manual lock. Now remove the fill plug on the resevoir and top it off (boat level) with ATF. You may need to lift the gearcase while running the PTT motor to get it to tilt up. After you fill it, run her down and back up and let it sit 5 min before refilling and repeating. This will bleed the PTT system
