Completely different Powerheads, and likely midsections. As for Gearcases, I never even looked, but unlikely to swap

Sorry, I typed the first message and then my husband corrected me with the second message; yes it is the same motors we are speaking about. Thanks for your advice.

There was a change in top driveshaft spline at end of 1988 production year.-----There was a change to a different engine block in 1986 I believe.

Lower unit can be changed.----But you have to take both apart to swap the driveshaft.
