I have a 175Hp Oceanrunner o/b , It runs Great, Normal ratio of 50/1 for 3 years is on target.
But it seems to me that it smokes more than I see other O/B's smoke.
I was told that this is normal for Johnson.
Please confirm! thanks

I would guess without seeing that one of two things would cause this assuming motor operates fairly well.If there is air getting in fuel line it can cause fuel pump diaphragm to cycle excessively which will inject more oil in relation through vro and cause smoking. The vro pump is a duel function unit that is air motor operated .it has a fuel pump half and a oil pump half driven by a common actuating rod. Also purge any air from remote oil tank to motor by remving hose and priming into container. The other possibility is that vro pump is leaking through internal seal into fuel pump cavity when motor is at rest causing oil rich start-up smoking. Does motor smoke the same throughout the boating episodes or does it seem more prevelant at start-ups or just at or near idle?

ob- Engine smokes most at start-up when cold. Smoke then simmers down. Plugs never seem fouled, and engine runs smooth and fine at any RPM.
Thanks for the feed-back.

Sounds like a classic case of internal seal leak between oil pump and fuel pump chambers. What happens is that oil seaps through when engine is stored at rest. The longer you store the more leaks through until You squeeze prime bulb and push the oil rich mix through the fuel pump to the carb bowls. You can either try to obtain rebuild kit for vro assy.or defeat the oil half and mix 50:1.Also, if you choose to rebuild good luck finding kit with oil half.New vro pump runs around 240 bucks.Fuel half works just fine as conventinal 50:1 pump.

How can the oil leak when the engine is quite a distance above the oil tank, which is in the bilge, and there is 0 PSI when the engine is not running?

Because the line stays purged up to the vro pump.Oil pump cavity stays full of oil when at rest and remote tank bulb remains firm. We're not talking about a large volume of oil,However even a couple of tablespoons extra in the volume of fuel that is between pump and carbs is a significant amount. same thing happened to mine and since then I have defeated vro oiling and mix 50:1.problems with smoky start-ups and stalling out of hole are history.Vro works great when it's working. There are also some issues with the remote oil tank vent design which tends to not work well because of the external application design as to not allow water to leak into tank.If this vent is not venting properly it allows tank pressure to build pushing oil through internal seals at rest. And theres a place for it to go as evidenced by the need to prime fuel side before starting cold.
