I have installed a CDI 113-6292K 1 power pack on my ?02 90hp Johnson and am trying to set the timing per CDI instructions. I am using a remote starter switch to crank the engine. I have disconnected the port timing sensor Tan and White/Black wires and grounded the Tan wire. When I crank the engine, the idle timing is 5? BTDC rather than 5? ATDC and the WOT timing is 30? BTDC rather than 20?. I suspect that it because Quick Start has advanced the timing 10?. Grounding the White/Black wire produces identical results.

My questions are:
1. What good could grounding the Tan wire do? Isn?t it the overheat wire? Isn?t the White/Black wire the 105? wire?
2. If Quick Start operates for 5-10 seconds after the engine starts regardless of engine temp and the engine is never started while it is cranking how could this technique ever work?

Re: Johnson OIS 2000 Questions

Are you grounding the sensor wires or harness wires? I suspect you are grounding the sensor wires because you haven't reported hearing the horn.

Be sure you are grounding the Blk/w harness wire not the sensor side....

Re: Johnson OIS 2000 Questions

Am grounding the tan wire that goes back to the console and the white/black that goes to the power pack

Re: Johnson OIS 2000 Questions

disconnect the port temperature switch/sensor leads and use a jumper wire to short the tan temperature sensor wire to engine ground. Once you have verified the timing pointer using a piston stop tool (or a dial indicator), connect all spark plug wires to a spark gap tester, and connect a remote starter to the engine and a timing light to the No.1 spark plug wire.

When you crank the engine over with the remote starter and check the timing, you will notice the timing is set to approximately 4?- 6? ATDC (after top dead center). By advancing the throttle all the way and rechecking the timing for WOT (wide open throttle), you should see approximately 19? - 20? BTDC (before top dead center)

Jonesq.
Good info.
I have a "93 150 Fast Strike which I have recently rebuilt.
Would like to check the timing and I can now with your info. What adjustments can I do to correct the out conditions should they exist.
