I have a Johnson 15 hp model 15R75C and I experienced the recoil failing to retract. I removed the recoil assembly and restrung with new rope and re-tensioned the recoil. Pulled it several times and it seems that it is jumping out of the spring. Is there a way to make this assembly more robust. It seems a little sensitive. Please let me know if you have any ideas out there to make it more robust. Do I need to replace the recoil spool? It seems to be OK, or is it not capturing the spring as it should? Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you all.

It sounds as though you didn't get the spring loop and the recoil plate post lined up right. There is no way for it to slip out once bolted up unless the post or the spring loop breaks off. Have a look here for a parts diagram if your not sure how it all goes together. To make it more robust you will have to hire and engineer and a machinist. Honestly it will work fine if all parts are o.k. I must also confess I haven't had one that old apart but I've done several of them post 1978 when they made a slight change. Best of luck. Rick.

Is the spring jumping out of the bottom plate that holds it?

2 things, that bottom plate bends allowing for the spring to jump out and the end of the spring can mangle up. What I do is straighten the plate and then I fold about 1/2 an inch of the spring back so It holds on better.

I made you a diagram of where I am referring to.

Same basic concept Rick from 74 up, I fixed a 77 2 weeks ago for a friend. Read my post, that's what the old one's do, sounds like it was fixed in later production.

That's even if that's his issue :D

Took it apart, found that a washer was not in the right sequence. Spring looked fine. Works fine.
