Johnson Outboard 6HP 1984

Gear lever very hard to change gears,have been told it is the linkage under the engine and the only way to get to it is to remove the engine.<br />Any help would be gratefully received. bryangeorge@bigpond.com.au

There should be a small inspection plate about halfway down your lower unit with two flathead screws in it. If you remove it the linkage is right there with two brass bolts. You say it is hard to get in gear. Is it not going completely into gear (forward and reverse) or is it just simply hard to push or pull to get it in gear?
