Re: Johnson outboard info

The numbers say that it is a 48 horsepower "Special". Don't ask me what's so special about it, I don't know. Are you sure that's a G in the serial number? If it were a C it would mean it was built in Canada.
J = Johnson
48 = horsepower
ES = electric start special
L = 20" long shaft
ER = code for 1994
D = nothing. If it were anything other than D it would mean some mid-year change had taken place.

Re: Johnson outboard info

THE SPL (SPECIAL) DESIGNATION WAS FOR THE LOW-COST MODEL. TO KEEP THE INITIAL COST DOWN, THEY DID NOT INSTALL POWER TRIM NOR WILL IT HAVE A VRO PUMP. YOU WILL NEED TO PREMIX THE OIL.

A side note: there are G prefix serial numbers for 90s ish OMC outbaords. G is for the assembly plant in Calhoun, Georgia. It was closed in 2001 as part of BRP's restructuring.
