Re: Johnson problem motor or just popular?

I've asked for help on this bulletin board for both Johnson and Mercury.. (the merc belongs to a friend.) Seems to me that the Johnson people are just more helpful. I certainly get more answers on the Johnson board. I also think that Johnsons are easier to work on, so perhaps more people are willing to give it a try? One thing is for certain... After a good going over with lots of help from folks on this forum, I cranked my 1958 Super Seahorse over last night and she started right up after seven years of collecting dust. That says a lot in my opinion.
Tom

I would guess more old mercs are dead (the white painted ones)while jo/ev keeps on ticking.Even 70,s mercs won't start, without special priming, and jo/ev fires right up.
DHP

The Johnson/Evinrudes, particularly the older motors, have a long reputation for being reliable and long lasting. Around here, all saltwater motors for many years were OMCs for this very reason. Take a look at the age of many of the motors you see in the posts and you'll get an idea of the very large number of old OMCs that are still running.

If you look real close you will see that its mostly the same questions asked over and over on the Johnson/Evinrude forum.

I just love my Evinrude 9.9 to death! Smooth, reliable and fast. OMCs are the most common outboards on our nearby river. Too bad OMC is defunct!

OMC isn't dead, as long as we keep the engines running! lol, Bombadier is the new name for omc now. as for other engines, I have a mariner 3.5, nothing but trouble. putting together an old evinrude 40hp, easy to work on.

Re: Johnson problem motor or just popular?

It's simple numbers. The "Johnson Forum" actually encompasses both Evinrude and Johnson - TWO BRANDS. And there are more Johnsons and Evinrudes in circulation than there are Mercurys. Johnson has been in business since 1921, Evinrude since 1909. Mercury's been in business since 1939. Johnson had built a MILLION outboards by 1951 and TWO MILLION by 1959! Factor in Evinrude's similar numbers and you've got around FOUR MILLION OMCs in circulation by 1960! Mercury cracked their first million in 1956, and second million in 1966. I am pretty sure the proportions remained similar all along, meaning there are about twice as many Johnrudes out there as there are Mercs - almost twice as many Johnrude posts as there are Merc posts...
- Scott
