Re: Johnson pros i need help

i'm having a similar problem. only difference mine will start up in the water but run like crap in forward. put it in neutral it clears and will tach up perfect. reverse it does the same thing. when i go in forward sometimes it shuts off and others i'm lucky enough to get to go a little bit and run at about 2 grand and thats wide open. but it works just fine on the hose. just wondering if anybody has had the same problem and what you gotta do to fix it. maybe tach it up till it blows and get a new motor? lol

Don't know you exact problem but the symptoms are that the motor doesn't run right under load. A cylinder or two not working will still permit a engine to run with no load and the configuration of a prop will not put the motor under much load in reverse.

Possibly a lot of monfilament fish line around the prop shaft under the prop. On muffs you have no resistance on the prop, but in water the extra drag of the fish line & the prop's water thrust, the motor can not rev up enough to shift into forward.

This is where simple testing procedures can tell you a wealth of information:

Do a visual inspection, are there any noticeable leaks on the motor, carbs, lower unit. Are the electronics visually defective (cracks, dry rot).

Do a compression test, this can tell you quite a bit.

A spark test is also a good idea, ignition performance at idle versus under load are two different animals.

Are your fuel tank, lines, and carbs clean?

The methods for all of these simple tests can be found here on the site and will help your motor tell you what is wrong.

Making a statement like this will only confuse many people, there is a difference between a "kill" switch and an ignition switch.

Saying that because the motor will shutoff it has a kill switch will send some people scurrying around their boat looking for a seperate switch, when in reality many people know that there are several motors out there that do not in fact have a kill switch, they just have an ignition switch similar to what is in their car.

Do you also run around telling people that your car has a kill switch because you have a key?

I was helping him find out quickly by advising what I said and obviously he knew what I was talking about just because you didn't know doesn't mean he or everyone else didn't. All boaters pretty much know what a kill switch is and that wire in the engine harness is a kill wire, if I wanted to say emergency kill (landyard) I would have. Notice I advised of location and color of wires and not send him on a wild goose chase.

If I didn't know then why did I clearly state the difference of the two, I was making it clear that there is a difference.

Many people that come onto the site have not even so much as taken a motor cover off before

Great job then, glad you know that much and this site is for helping people not criticising others that are trying to help.

If you have a problem with your motor then start your own thread. Don't jump someone else.
Irob. This is for you. Dont be in too much of a hurry to fit a new switchbox before checking the Rectifier/regulator. Thats the thing that is bolted into the top of the Exhaust tower. Got two plugs and other wires connected to it. You will need a test meter to check it.
I have just finished with a problem on one of my 1993 150 Johnsons. Glad I checked the Rect/Reg because that had failed and I believe that was the cause of the Switch box failure.
