1st boat and new to it all. 1976 Johnson 55hp 2 cyl. How can I tell if the water pump is pumping? At partial throttle hot water pours (not shooting) out of the two verticle slots on the upper back of the verticle drive shaft housing. At full throttle no water comes out there. Water (hot) does shoot out of a hole just above the cavitation plate. It is a constant stream shooting foward hitting the back of the boat at about 1/2 inch above water level. The guy I bought it from said the impeller is new, but how can I be sure?

Re: Johnson pump indicator

If the hot horn is working it's most likely OK. Truthfully - the only way to know for sure is to put in a new pump now. It would concern me if he only replaced the impeller anyway. Look at it this way - a new pump is very cheap insurance for peace of mind. And what is his idea of new? A month? A year?

Good luck!

Sorry, I don't know what a hot horn is. I thought the rubber impeller WAS the pump. I've got about 20 hours on it now. 4 hours continuos in Florida heat and it didn't overheat yet so it must be cooling.
