?Huh? Did you disconnect the shift rod at the connector behind the oval plate on the side of the midsection? That, plus the bolts is the only thing keeping it from coming down. There will be a tad of resistance as the water tube pulls out of the grommet, but it is way out by the time you have it down 3"

Re: Johnson qd 20 need to get up and running

I firgured it out it was the shift rod connector! Good thing I decieded to take it all the way apart it really needs a good cleaning. I did have a couple of unfortunate events. The piece that the shift rod screws through broke I was caked in crud I tried to take it off so I could clean and the retaining screw head broke off. When I tried to drill it the thing snapped The top arrow shows where it goes.
The second thing the retainer that the drive shaft comes up through got bent when I was trying to slide the lower unit back in the first time:% That is the second arrow as I am sure you know. Does anyone know the part numbers of the jewel or even if I can get them?
Thanks

The inner lever is 377188; screw for it is 303714; tab lock washer is 303715; the baffle plate is 305297; powerhead gasket is 308385. All are available according to www.ishopmarine. If you can straigten the baffle plate to where the crankshaft's carbon seal parts don't contact it, it should be OK. Hang onto your upper teeth when you see the price for the lever!

Re: Johnson qd 20 need to get up and running

Should this look like this?

It looks awfull sooty in there how do I clean this out without getting a bunch of crap in the cylinders?
Also Why are those holes in the cylinder walls doesn't the water come up in that chamber it is not closed off from the other water chamber? Sorry for my ignorance.

Re: Johnson qd 20 need to get up and running

Don't worry about the carbon. That is the exhaust passages and all manner of smoke and crud goes through there. It won't affect the engine operation at all. It's just a nasty place.

Say what? Are you talking about those 8 big holes that you can see the piston through? Those are the exhaust ports. The pistons open and close them as it travels up and down in the cylinder, serving as valves. The only dumb question is the one that is not asked. You might be interested in reading up on how a two cycle engine works. OR am I not understanding which holes you are talking about?

Re: Johnson qd 20 need to get up and running

I see said the blind man. I have never taken a 2 stroke motor apart before or an outboard motor. Well I guess the follow up question would be where does the water from the impeller go it looked to me like it travled up the lower unit and into the motor for cooling is that not correct if so which passage does it take. Sorry I really am and that for all your help guys.

Re: Johnson qd 20 need to get up and running

Well..................
Thanks to everyone here for all of thier help. I took the head off of the motor yesterday and the gasket was of course disenegrated. It appears that one of the cylinder liners has a fracture so appearantly I will not be having a motor to repair. If anyone needs any qd-20 parts let me know I may part it out on ebay also. I guess I could maybe find a powerhead that is good if anyone knows of any?
Thanks again for all your help
Ben

Re: Johnson qd 20 need to get up and running

I am having second thoughts about this cracked cly. I figured it could not hurt at this point so I took the pistons out so I could inspect the cyl a little better. How do you tell the difference between a crack and a scoring mark?
This is the best picture I could get it is kinda tough to see without perfect light. Does that look cracked or scored?
