Hello all. I have just put a 1983 15hp electric start on a 1964 14 ft Starcraft Dart and I have tried 2 sets of 2 lever controls on it and I cannot get either set adjusted to work properly. On the shift cable I can only get reverse and neutral and cannot get it to shift in to forward. Is there any way to shorten these cables or do I need to by new controls? One set is an old Simplex 2 lever control and the other is a newer 2 lever model. On the throttle side I have the same problem, cannot get it adjusted. Both sides are off by about an inch and a half or so of lining up with the connectors. Is there any help for my problem? Thanks for any advice.

are you using the cables from the old 1964 boat to the newer engine?

Both sets of cables I am trying to use have the same connector ends. The ends will go on the newer motor but I cannot adjust the cables to fit in the hold down clamps that keep the outer cable in place while the inner cable slides to shift or speed up or down.

If you have the older style cables, the casing guides have opposing set screws to allow you to set the initial length of the cable wire at the engine end.

ezeke I have tried the set screw adjustment and I am still about an inch and a half from being able to hook things up. Will I have to buy a new set of cables and controls from iboats.com to be able to use this setup?

Is the wire sliding through the casing guide and out the far end when you loosen the set screws?

Or is it that the wire has previously been cut too short?

Yes the wire is sliding through the casing and does not appear to have been cut short. I will make another try at connecting the controls tomorrow after I gave it a break today. The boat is a 1964 and the control that came with it is a Johnson Ship-Master. I don't know if this is original to this Starcraft or what year it is. Maybe looking at it in new light and with what info I have maybe I can sort it out. Do you know what link-sync is ? I have seen it mentioned on several other threads but no explination other than you have to have a shop manual to do it. It was said that this has to be the initial step in hooking up the controls corectly. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to my problem.

Disconnect the cables at the engine and put the motor in neutral, checking by turning propeller to make sure that it spins freely;

Move both arms on the remote fully forward and then back to neutral and stop;

Set the casing guide to slip back on the engine connectors without moving anything else;

Make the final fine adjustments using the black trunnion.

I'm attaching a picture of your Johnson Ship Master control for others that may be more familiar with the control.

Re: Johnson remote cable problem

Thanks guys for all the information. I now longer have to hook up this 15hp to my old controls on my 64 Starcraft as I purchased an 1993 30hp Evinrude with controls to put on this boat. I needed a larger engine for this boat anyway so its get ready for it's maiden voyage to the fishing lake this weekend. Have a good day and thanks.
